negotiated his truce with them?" The English

captain might look like a debonair

Elizabethan dandy, but he had the keen instincts of a

seahawk. "Did the females of their species send

them out to attack and pillage for some new purpose

of their own? Or were they cannons loosed upon the

deck by some twist of fate"..."...com "Precisely what

we wondered at the-time," Kirk agreed

"But that part of the story is Captain Sulu's

to tell"

Sulu paused, strongly tempted to stay and enjoy

the strong feeling of camaraderie he'd found among this

strange assortment of captains. While he

debated, the quiet bartender came back to his

station and made his choice for him by pouring out another

Martian Red Ice Ale. Caught between its

mellow honeyed scent and the spicy aroma of the

almonds, Sulu sighed and opened the menu.

"Pot-stickers and the satay chicken," he told

the bartender, then passed the menu on to Kirk.

"You're sure we'll have enough time to eat?" "Steak

sandwich, extra fried onions. Don't worry,

Captain. We'll be done before the sun sinks over

the yardarm."

That promise brought nods of agreement from the

redheaded pirate, the elderly captain, and the

Englishman, but made both the Gorn and the felinoid

look puzzled. "What ins thins planet called

Yardarm?" the felinoid asked the freighter

captain. "And why must we be done before local

sunset there?"

He scrubbed a hand through his salt-and-pepper beard

to hide a smile. "Uhh, I think that's

just another way to say "happy hour." So,

Captain, what happened after the pirates boarded

your ship?"

"They didn't board it,".sulu admitted.

"I wish they had, we might have had a chance against them

then. But all they did was blast the Falcons free

and rake our warp nacelles and impulse engines with

enough phaser fire to kip us from following them. Then they

vanished, leaving us unarmed and defenseless-right on the

edge of Klingon space."

"Bridge to Captain Sulu."

I reached out and caught hold of the nearest

bulkhead, to keep myself from drifting into some

critical piece of equipment while I tapped

my wrist communicator on. The entire secondary

hull had lost gravity in the pirate attack, and the

large room that housed our gravity generators had

become a floating minefield of debris, spare

parts and old coffee cups. After working in this chaos for

two hours, my chief engineer's temper had become

understandably short. Even the captain who'd stopped

in momentarily to check his progress wasn't

immune to being snapped at if he bumped into the

wrong thing at the wrong time.

"Sulu here."

"Sir, we're being hailed by the Enterprise.

Captain Kirk would like to speak to you personally."

I winced, but my dismay was muted now by exhaustion

and a resurrected sense of pride. Despite all

the damage that the Anjiri and Nykkus pirates

had inflicted on my ship-the shuttle disbay breached

to space where the Falcons had blasted their way out,

the warp nacelles.blackened by phaser fire, the

shields still offline, and the computer networks out in over

half the ship-not a single member of the

Excelsior's huge crew had combeen lost. Our

months of training might not have prepared us to avoid the

pirate's attack, but they had paid off in smooth

emergency evacuations and flawless disaster response

both during and after it. On desk after deck, my

resilient crew had begun repairing equipment and

reconnecting circuits within minutes of our

opponents' departure.
